Why do some still consider hybrids like Prius “alternative” vehicles, rather than mainstream family cars?
Isn’t the technology just the next step in automotive advancement to reduce emissions & consumption?
Have you ever done the math, asking how being green isn’t already so common that everyone supports it?  
Unfortunately, there are some people called “greenwashers”, who intentionally mislead about the new clean & efficient
technology.  They hope you don’t consider questions like that.  In fact, they will even go as far as labeling anyone who
shows interest in the topic as a “treehugger” with the hope to demean & intimidate.  Don’t allow them.  That is easy to
overcome and the information simple to understand.  Their resistance to change will fade as more learn about what’s
included in this document.
Carbon Emissions
This is the type of emission is directly tied to vehicle efficiency.  It is also the type that contributes to climate change.
The specific pollutant involved is Carbon Dioxide.  The higher the MPG, the less your impact is to the environment.
Smog Emissions
This type of emission has no relation to vehicle efficiency.  In fact, some high MPG vehicles emit larger quantities of
pollutants contributing to smog than those with lower MPG.

From the economic turmoil of 2008, the need for automakers to deliver improvement is under great strain.  Attention is
focused so heavily on their immediate survival that long-term well-being isn’t taken seriously.  In fact, consumers are
being misled into believing abundant & affordable solutions are coming soon and that the need isn’t as urgent as those
concerned insist.  Unfortunately, offering reduced emission & consumption choices quickly is crucial.  With so many
dirty & wasteful vehicles now on the road, the amount of time it will take before they are finally replaced in favor of
technology that is both cleaner and more efficient is great.  Many, many years are required for that transition.

2009
It is the pivotal year.  The market in general had perceived hybrids as a niche, not paying close enough attention to realize
just how far the technology had progressed.  Those prior 8 years of real-world consumer ownership around the world had
been thought of as a novelty, something to talk about, a future yet to come.  But in 2009, that finally changes.  The push
for hybrid production to become a large portion of each automaker’s plan will be recognized as a practical step forward.
Proving the technology has already been accomplished.  The need for a competitive technology that is responsible for
business, as well as the environment and energy resources, is easy to accept now.  No more holding on to terrible market
practices of the past.  The time has come to fully embrace hybrids.

Toyota Prius Power Split Device pdf

Prius doesn’t actually have a transmission, because there are no gears and the power carriers are permanently
engaged.  The illustration you see above is a simplified diagram of what Prius has for the transfer of power
instead.  It very closely resembles another component found in all vehicles, a differential.  The only difference
is that there are multiple sources of power, rather than just one; hence the name “Power-Split-Device”.  To
keep references simple, it can be called: “PSD”.
Another reference for this device is a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), but it is not type found in
both traditional vehicles and other types of hybrid, called: “Cone & Belt”.  Instead, this CVT is referred to as
the “Planetary” type, due to the orbital movement of the components within.
The entire PSD is remarkably small, only the size of an adult hand’s palm.  Each of the carriers has the ability
to rotate in its own unique way, providing a wide range of power options.  The “Ring” carrier is sometimes
powered by the battery-pack to provide the ability to drive using only electricity (both forward & backward),
allowing the engine to stop running to save gas.  At other times, the “Ring” carrier creates power, regenerating
electricity when you use the brakes.  The “Planet” carrier is powered by the engine, which causes rotation of
both the car’s wheels (for driving forward) and the “Sun” carrier (for generating electricity).  And while the
“Planet” & “Sun” carriers are spinning, the “Ring” carrier can join in to provide additional thrust to the
wheels or to allow engine RPM to be reduced.  Lastly, the “Sun” carrier is also used for starting the engine.

Vital Info  Ignore the advanced technology!
It's too easy to get preoccupied with everything Prius automatically does for you, especially with
the Multi-Display providing constant performance information.  The hybrid system was designed
so you could to drive it like a traditional car.  That way, you can enjoy the remarkably smooth &
quiet ride.  Let the computer worry about how to save gas and reduce emissions.
Engine Warm-Up  Reducing Emissions is the highest priority for Prius.  It strives to remain a SULEV (Super Ultra
Low Emission Vehicle) at all times, which means the catalytic-converter must be kept warm even if
that requires consuming some gas to accomplish that.  Fortunately, you still get better than average
mileage, even if the engine doesn't shut off right away.
Winter Heat  Creating heat for the emissions system and heat to keep you warm is fastest and most efficient if you simply drive gently immediately after starting the Prius in the winter.  Allowing the engine to
run while the Prius is parked takes longer and is less efficient.  "Just Drive It!"
Turning the Key  The user-manual states to turn the key and hold it until you hear a beep.  Realistically, you can
actually let go of the key immediately.  Once the computer accepts your request, the engine will
start-up after preparation is complete.  Think of it as clicking a button on a computer-mouse.  The
catch is you must still wait for the "READY" prompt before shifting into Reverse or Drive.
Blue Light  The blue light, which looks like a thermometer in liquid, is located to the right of the speedometer.
It indicates the engine is still cool.  This is normal during engine warm-up, it is not a warning.  It
will usually disappear about in 5 minutes, depending on the outside temperature and if the Prius
was recently used.  Driving slowly immediately after startup, rather than just waiting while parked,
is the most efficiently method of reducing warm-up time.  Idling until warm-up is complete before
driving takes longer and wastes gas.
Remote Confirm  Use the remote when leaving your Prius.  Clicking the "lock" button on it will confirm that all the
doors really did get shut all the way.  If they didn't, the internal overhead light may remain on.  That
will drain the small 12-volt auxiliary battery if left that way long enough in a 2001 or 2002 Prius.
Beginning with the 2003 model, the light will automatically shut itself off even if a door is left ajar.

Electricity comes from the Gas Engine & Brakes
You never plug in the battery-pack.  In fact, there isn't even a cord.  The recharging is done for you.
Gas Engine automatically provides electricity by igniting gasoline to operate the generator.
Brakes automatically create electricity by using excess kinetic energy to provide regeneration.
Frequent Gas Engine Restarts are not harmful
Rather than just using a small motor to spin the gas engine to only 100 RPM, like traditional vehicles do,
the hybrid system uses a much larger motor which spins the gas engine to a minimum of 800 RPM.  Then
the system waits until oil-pressure is established before injecting fuel and producing a spark.  This process
enables a very smooth startup, reducing burden on bearings, pistons, and cylinders.
Battery-Pack
Life-Expectancy is 10-12 years or around 150,000 to 200,000 miles depending on driving conditions.
Some owners have even exceeded that distance.  (Note: The battery-pack was designed to be recycled.)
Warranty is 8 years / 100,000 miles.  This covers the battery-pack, power-inverter, generator-motor,
and propulsion-motor, enough to provide worry-free confidence for most owners.
Total weight is only 99 pounds and it's only the size of 6 regular loaves of bread.
Acceleration
The hybrid system is surprisingly swift.  You can effortlessly merge into traffic, just like a traditional car.
Cold Weather
Years of Prius owners driving in the northern United States and Canada have proven that even frigid
conditions are of no concern.  The cold weather of winter is not a problem for the hybrid system.
Hill Climbing
You'll be quite surprised by the ability Prius has to climb hills.  The torque provided by the motor and the
electricity provided by the gas engine on-the-fly will allow you to zip up to the top without any struggle.
Rear-Window View
Think of the two sections as “bifocals”.  Since the bottom section is physically lower than a rear-window
in most cars, it is only for viewing very close objects.  Everything else is visible through the upper section.
